What is the EODL One Act Festival?

The Eastern Ontario Drama League promotes artistic and technical standards and encourages education in theatre arts. It serves as a resource centre for theatre activities in Eastern Ontario. EODL has two festivals per year for their membership. One of them is this One Act Festival. It is usually held at the beginning of November. It is open to nine theatre groups on a first-come, first-served basis once it is open for applications. A one act play is defined according to the guidelines of EODL, as being at least twenty five minutes long but no longer than sixty minutes. The entire festival is adjudicated by a professional adjudicator.

Since plays are no longer than an hour, three theatre groups perform their plays on Friday evening, November 3rd, followed by another three on the Saturday matinee and the final three on Saturday evening. On Sunday, November 5th, the festival comes to an end with a sumptuous Awards Brunch followed by the Adjudicator awarding various trophies to individuals and groups in many different artistic categories.

Trophies have been donated by various theatre groups. North Grenville Community Theatre donated a trophy for costumes named in honour of Nancy Chajkowski, a longtime member known for her directing and costume design.

Every play entered in the One Act Play has been rehearsed to perfection in hopes of impressing the adjudicator. The festival is entertaining as well as a learning process. Every actor and every theatre group perform and interpret things differently on stage. We watch and learn from one another. The adjudicator, after each three plays or session, gives a public adjudication followed by a more in depth adjudication with the theatre group members, the public is allowed to be present but only as observers.
